“Hello, my name is Jovanotti and I come from Italia. I am so proud to be here, you can’t imagine”. Così si presenta Lorenzo Cherubini al Bonnaroo Music Festival. L’accento italiano è forte, fa sorridere, fa tenerezza dopo 10 giorni di “Hell yeah” e “What’s up”.

Io gli rispondo: “this is the place to be”, e Jovanotti lo sa. “My english is bad but my sound is perfect”. E l’italian Funky Grandmaster.

Big names came out with new albums in early 2011.  Radiohead. The Strokes. Above all.

The Strokes – Angles

Few weeks ago I wrote a post about The Comeback, about The Most awaited album of 2011, about One of the best band of the decade. Here we are.

The Strokes went on hiatus following 2006′s “First Impression of the Earth” and finally released “Angles” on March 22th. After a (always too short) weekend, here my First Impression of the Album.

After a opening on a 80′s pop reggae (“Machu Picchu”), the single “Under Cover of Darkness” seems to be the Troy Horse of the NY’s band for this summer’s festivals.

The guitars of Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr blossom with the warmth of the band’s debut “Is This It”, with an industrial side to them as well, that makes ‘Under Cover Of Darkness’ feel like the bridge between “Is This It” and their last album, 2006′s “First Impressions Of Earth“.

“Metabolism” is a generic, ear-damaging song reminiscent of Muse in their darkest hour and is probably one of the standout songs on this record, fusing what has always been great about The Strokes (their dark, but not too dark melodies) with a somewhere etherealness.

Overall, “Angles” is certainly not a bad album. If you like The Strokes you’ll be very pleased. However, “Angles” sticks very very far from the previous masterpieces of my favourite band. That sucks.

PMC – love is all

Early February Radiohead suprised again: with a very short announcement via its website, Radiohead revealed new album would be released the 18th of February. The 8th album of Radiohead was supposed to be launched at Hachiko Square, Tokyo:  a broadcasting of the album was planned on the the huge square’s screens, then cancelled for security reasons. We are talking about Radiohead, not about Billy Talent.

Radiohead – “The King of Limbs”
The King of Limbs enriches their discography of a job again different than the previous ones: it’s not pop, it’s not electronic, not rock. What is, then, “The King of Limbs”?
It brings together elements from everything that came before it, in the context of a play of shadows that makes this album perhaps the most mysterious and difficult to fit in their history.
This album has un unmistakable style, a perfect cross between the coolness of “Kid A” and the languid trails of “Amnesiac“.
The most immediately appealing tracks on “The King of Limbs” is titled “Little by Little”, which yields whatever might be catchy about it over time.

When Yorke coyly smirks, “I’m such a tease and you’re such a flirt” on “Little by Little””, it’s as close to a pop moment as you’ll get on the album.
“Codex” is a beautiful melody brought into focus by the band’s decision to dispense of the usual trimmings in favour of piano and ghostlike effects: distant echoes and a sense winding and heat close to perfection.

The song ends with more static and bird song – there seems to be an over-arching theme at work: the natural world in tension with modernity.

At the end of the day, “The King of Limbs” is probably more an “Amnesiac” than an “In Rainbows” or “Kid A”: an album to admire more than truly love.

Festival Guide 2011: Rock am Ring

Posted: February 22, 2011 in Festival

Rock am Ring – Nurburgring, Germany (3-5 June)

Brother event of Rock im Park (taking place same weekend in Nuremberg and having a mirror lineup), RAR and RIM combined are the largest music event in Germany and one of the largest in the world, with a capacity of over 150’000 participants.

Best aspect of RAR is surely the lineup. PMC’s experience in 2007 was epic: Muse, Arctic Monkeys, White Stripes in one night. Enough to fill 3 headliner slots at any festival. Smashing Pumpking and Mando Diao were also at the party. 2008 offered RATM, Metallica, The Prodigy, The Verve, QOTSA, BMV, Babyshambles. 2009 and 2010 have been a bit disappointing with Placebo, The Killers and Mando Diao (2009), Muse, RATM, Kiss and BMV (2010).

Expect a HUGE lineup in 2011 with Kings of Leon, Sistem of a Down, Coldplay and Mando Diao already confirmed.

Said that, RAR doesn’t offer much more than music. Fair, you would say, enough. I don’t think so. I go to festivals for music, sure, however that’s not all. I LOVE good and local food when travelling, I look for friendly people, I want nice surroundings, and I PRETEND TO PARTY ALL NIGHT LONG.

RAR offers awful food, nothing more than kebab and hamburgers. Haven’t met anyone: forget about friendly “hippies”, RAR’s attendance are more german hardrockers dressed in black&chains. Surroundings… bad really bad. What else would you pretend from a festival organised on a race track? And the last point: NO PARTY at night. Everything was shut down after the last headliner, around 1am. That’s totally unacceptable. Ridiculous.

Finally, I don’t think any of you readers would ever again go to RAR. Me neither. At least not until Jim Morrison will resurrect (or reappears), overcome his fear of big spaces and do a one-night-only concert in Nurburgring. Pretty much difficult.

Glastonbury Festival is the largest, most varied and coolest festival in the world.

Glastonbury Festival of Performing Arts – Worthy Farm, Pilton, Somerset, England (22-26 June)

With more than 200’000 participants camping during the 5 days (Wednesday-Monday), Glasto offers more than 800 live performances  over 80 stages. Glasto is HUGE.

Better plan in advance to get a ticket: they are sold-out early in October and you need to register even before, Glasto’s tickets are nominative. Around 150’000 tickets are sold in few hours every year, thanks as well to the deposit system which allows you to deposit GBP 50 and pay the rest later. Pretty much cool way to avoid black market.

Eavis family owns the business since 40 years. The local farmer and land owner Michael Eavis organised the first festival on 1970 with 1’500 participants. It now appeals the biggest bands in the world and during the week of the festival, major british newspapers cover the event.

Headliners are not officially communicated since few weeks before the festival, however you WILL NOT be deceived of any of last year’s lineup: Arctic Monkeys (legendary performance), The Killers and The Who (2007)
,Kings of Leon, Jay-z (very criticized) and The Verve (The Comeback), Blur (!!!), Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young (2009), Gorillaz, Muse and Stevie Wonder (2010). 2011′s headliners should be Coldplay, U2 and Beyoncé.

Festivals are British stuffs. They need lot of beer. They mean want crap food. They sometimes offer mud. They are the Best. That’s right, Glasto is not FRF: it’s even better. If sun is shining.

One last thing. If you can plan a road trip over South England before the festival. Go to Newquay. Is beautiful.

2011 Festival guide: Fuji Rock Festival

Posted: February 14, 2011 in Festival

The time has come. In February festivalgoers need to take the ultimate decision and get tickets. You need to find friends. You need to find time. You need to find the right festival.

Fuji Rock Festival – Naeba Ski Resort, Japan (29-31 July)

The biggest festival of Asia, FRF is also the greenest festival of the world. Held in a magnificent scenario of Japanese mountains, expect to camp on a golf course, take an aerial lift to reach the highest stage, cascades of limpid water and Japanese food.

With more than 100’000 participant and 10 stages, FRF attract many international first level artists, as Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, Red Hot Chili Peppers (2006), The Cure, Muse, The Chemical Brothers (2007), Kasabian, My Bloody Valentine, Bloc Party (2008), Oasis, Franz Ferdinand, Weezer (2009), Muse, Massive Attack, Atoms for Peace (2010).

Unlike many european festival, FRF will not die down after the last headliner. All Night Fuji, a head-banging DJ-set held on Friday night till 6am at Orange Court. Red Marquee offers electro set till 6am every night, as Palace of Wonder, one of the most fun area, open all night long and the favourite place to spot artists.

Participating at FRF is an amazing occasion to getting in touch with local culture: even if Australians and British people are more and more every year, 95% of the attendance is japanese.

Feelings, atmosphere, respect are unique during 4 days of international and Japanese artists, excellent food, cleans loos and no rubbish.

Fuji Rock is PMC’s favourite festival. More reviews to come.

The White Stripes split up

Posted: February 3, 2011 in News

“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong  to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is  that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

Sincerely,
Meg and Jack White
The White Stripes

With a statement released yesterday on their official website, The White Stripes have officially announced they have split up. The duo will make no further new recordings or perform live.

The blues-rock band released their debut, self-titled album in 1999. They then had a huge success in 2001 with their third album, “White Blood Cells”. Their last full album release was 2007′s “Icky Thump”.

The reason of the split is not due to artistic differences, lack of wanting to continue or health issues (Meg suffered from anxiety), but due to a myriad of reason and particularly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band.

The White Stripes will be sadly missed, but their legacy will live on.

Peace, Jack, Love, Meg

The first month of the year just finished. Which is the first set of cool albums you should listen in 2011?!

PrettyMuchCool did the work for you.

Gorillaz – The Fall

It hasn’t even been a year since the release of the critically acclaimed “Plastic Beach“, the cartoon band recorded “The Fall” during US tour which is part album, part audio sketch book, part tour diary. Written on the road and recorded using an iPad, the album lacks of the instrumental layers and the majestic instrumental contribution like in Plastic Beach.

If “The Fall” is not an accomplished album, it is however a pleasant Christmas gift. Listen Gorillaz – “Revolving Doors”, Damon’s vocals over gentle guitar.

White Lies – Ritual

2009′s debut album “To Lose My Life” made White Lies one of the freshest new band of the year, with the singles “Death” and “To Lose My Life”. White Lies’ dark sound has been compared to Interpol, Editors and The Killers.

Their second album, “Ritual” introduce a larger use of electronic elements and… nothing more. Problem is, for the second straight album, they use the same exact set of tools as every other band in this sphere. “Ritual” is not a bad album, it’s a decent set, but one whose pulse remains steady throughout. Watch the first single White Lies – “Bigger Than Us“.

Iron & Wine – Kiss Each Other Clean

Iron & Wine is not a band. Iron & Wine is the stage name of folk rock singer Sam Beam and his fourth studio album is a suprising and majestic triumph.

Surely, my favourite discover for this very poor period of new music and hardly recommended to all of you. Hope you will enjoy Iron & Wine – “Walking Far From Home”.

The Strokes have revealed today the tracklisting for their fourth album “Angles”, supposed to be released on March 21. The album comes after a very long break : “Angles” will be the New York band’s first since 2006′s ‘First Impressions Of Earth’.

Pretty long break for Julian Casablancas (lead vocals), Nick Valensi (guitar), Albert Hammond Jr. (guitar), Nikolai Fraiture (bass guitar) and Fabrizio Moretti (drums and percussion).

What have they done in those 5 years? EnjoyDrinkPartyTravelF**KSleepReadPlayaninstrumentDrinkPartyBlablaLaugh FINALLY A VERY GOOD WAY OF SPENDING 5 YEARS. For sure, this is what me and all you guys dream about, isn’t that true? But you need to keep yourself a little occupied, even if you are a NY rockstar.

Julian, the teenager sent by the father at the age of 14 to Institut Le Rosey (Switzerland for the records) to resolve his drinking problems, and Albert, son of a British-Gibraltarian successful singer&songwriter and also Julian’s schoolmate at Le Rosey, released solo albums which cannot be forgotten by The Strokes fans. Finally, Swiss Education paid out.

Halbert Hammond Jr. “Yours to Keep”, released in 2006, surely lacks Julian’s voice and Valensi’s solos, however the album is far better than it has the right to be. Actually, evaluate by yourself with this acoustic version of “Everyone Gets a Star” played at Benicassim Festival 2007.

“Yours to Keep” is nice, is fresh, is indie. But it’s just a sort of hors d’oeuvres to Casablancas’s awaited comeback, which culminated in “Phrazes for the Young”, released in 2009 and followed by a tour of the singer. The tour is noteworthy as was the first live performances of Julian since 2006, in which he didn’t disappoint the fans by cuddling them with few of The Strokes songs during the concerts.

The album has been widely reported as an electro-pop departure, which is somewhat true in the single “11th Dimension”.

However, do we care about departures? No. No we care about breaks? No. We care about comebacks. Yes. March 21.

2010 was a quite poor year for music. Hopefully, there are always exceptions.

The XX’s selftitled debut album is my favourite one: innovative, calm and concise.

For the biography side, The xx are a three-piece band from London, England, United Kingdom, formed in 2005. They met while studying at Elliott School, notable for alumni including Hot Chip, Burial and Four Tet. In September 2010 they won the Barclaycard Mercury Prize. Not Bad At All for those 4 (later 3) twentyyearsold guys.

For the music side, 11 songs that you need to listen over and over and over and over.

Start with “Crystalized”, the first single, the most famous, most catchy and simply the one that made me fall in love with this album.

Continue with “Basic Space” where XX, male/female vocals express at their best over a lone repetition of a drum machine.

Finally, take your time listen listen the full album starting with “Intro” and landing into the “Stars”. You will not be unsatisfied. Guaranteed.
